“Roofer near me.” “Dog groomer near me.” “Coffee near me.” People type or say these every day, usually on a phone and usually ready to call. If your business doesn’t come up, someone else’s does.
Your Google Business Profile does a lot of the work for map results. But Google also reads your website to understand what you do, where you do it, and whether you’re a good match. This guide covers the website side, in plain language.
First, a myth: you don’t need to write “near me”
Google already knows where the searcher is. When someone types “plumber near me”, Google looks for plumbers close to them. It isn’t looking for pages that contain the words “near me”.
So skip phrases like “best plumber near me” stuffed into your pages. They read badly to customers and don’t help. What helps is making it crystal clear what you do and where you do it.
1. Say what you do and where, in plain words
Your home page should say it in the first line people see: “Lawn care and landscaping in Cary and Apex, NC.” Then repeat it naturally in a few key places:
- The page title (the blue link in search results), for example “Lawn Care in Cary, NC | Green Acres Landscaping”.
- The main heading on the page.
- The footer, with your town and service area.
Use the words customers use. People search for “AC repair”, not “HVAC remediation solutions”.
2. Give each main service its own page
One page that lists ten services in a single paragraph gives Google little to go on. A separate page for each main service, such as “Drain Cleaning”, “Water Heater Repair” or “Bathroom Remodels”, lets you explain each one properly. It also gives Google a page that matches each search.
A good service page covers who it’s for, what’s included, the area you cover, a few photos of real jobs and a clear way to call or book. Our guide to writing a service page that turns visitors into calls walks through it.
3. Be clear about your service area
If customers come to you, show your full address and a map or directions.
If you travel to customers, list the towns and areas you cover. A simple line like “We serve Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Garner and Holly Springs” is enough for most businesses.
Be careful with city pages. Creating dozens of nearly identical pages (“Plumber in Cary”, “Plumber in Apex”, and so on) with only the town name swapped is something Google treats as spam. Only create a page for a town if you have something genuinely specific to say about your work there.
4. Make your name, address and phone match everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should read exactly the same on your website, your Google Business Profile, Facebook, Yelp and any other listing. “Suite 200” in one place and “#200” in another is fine, but a different phone number or an old address isn’t.
When everything matches, Google is more confident it’s showing the right business. And customers never call a disconnected number.
5. Help Google read your details
Behind the scenes, websites can include a small block of code called structured data that spells out your business name, address, phone, hours and the area you serve in a format search engines understand. Visitors never see it. If someone else manages your site, ask them whether it’s set up.
6. Make it work on a phone
Most “near me” searches happen on phones. If your site is slow, hard to read or makes people pinch and zoom, they’ll leave, and the next business is one tap away. Put your phone number at the top as a tap-to-call button. Our website checklist covers the rest.
7. Keep earning reviews
Reviews help with prominence, one of the three things Google weighs for local results, alongside relevance and distance. Customers also read them before they call. Our guide on getting more Google reviews the honest way shows you how to ask.
